The articles that interested me most were podcasts. Since I teach automotive technology my students can watch podcasts to learn a skill or create podcasts about a skill.
I also liked the articles on podcasting. I teach collision repair and my students could create podcasting demonstrating painting, repairing dents, aligning sheet metal etc. They would need to do everything correctly including safety, technique, and proper sequence.
The article I chose under research was "Amazed by international connections." I teach career tech and business oriented classes. My students have trouble at times grasping how global their world will be. Since most students are digital natives, we as teachers feel unprepared for some tasks. This article gave hope to empower by collaboration of educators as well as students abroad. We as teachers must step up to the challenge and not be afraid of new frontiers.
The article listed several ideas and web sites to connect to others globally. This opens the door for teachers and students to gather mass amounts of data for research or stir thoughts for creative ideas and brainstorming.
One lesson area that could be used in my class would be finances. The students could touch base with other students in three or four countries and compare work ethics, experiences, or expectations. They could collect data and create statistical charts or write essays of international habits and lifestyles that affect personal finances.
Q1- I chose "Geocaching in Kansas." I chose this article because I teach geography and had never heard of geocaching. In fact, I had to click on the link to define it.
Q2- I learned that geocaching is a GPS treasure hunt; in which, participants are given coordinates to a waterproof box. When they locate the box, they pull out a slip of paper. Those that collect the most slips win prizes. In "Geocaching in Kansas" they visited state parks and winners won camping.
Q3- I don't have GPS units for all my students, but I can do a lesson with this material. I could give each student an unlabelled map with latitudes and longitudes. Then I would give them all the same coordinates, and they would be required to find the location that existed there. I could even make it a race and award prizes.
I am very interested in podcasting so I read the article that was about podcasting. I feel that the use of podcasting is a great way to teach computer classes. This would be great for homebound students and even if a student missed a single class. This way you are able make sure every student receives the same lecture and instruction.
I chose the article on podcasting. I teach two subjects at one time so this will be an invaluable tool.
I learned that I can set up a podcast for my BCA II describing a concept and explaining an activity for them to do.
A lesson I will change will be how to transfer text, images and data between software programs. I will then have the students listen to the podcast and do an activity to see if they understood the podcast.
One of the articles I read was on the use of podcasts. I feel this could be an effective tool to use with both homebound students as well as when students are absent from class. Lessons could be recorded and students could access the lessons from home.
Also, teaching business courses, it is essential to keep students current and up to date on the latest technology. Podcasting is definitely upcoming technology that is affordable and easy to use in the classroom.

I thought the article about Weblins was interesting because often I find myself on a website and wanting to share or ask questions about something I have read.

A weblin give the owner of the weblin the ability to talk to other weblins who are viewing the same website as you are. The only way you are able to see if there are any other weblins on a webpage is if you have one. You are able to add weblin buddies and only talk to them.
Describe a lesson that you will create or change to include skills learned from this site.
The students can create a weblin. This would give them the ability to chat about research they are doing for a project or comment on an online reading assignment during class. They could even be working on a collaborative project with a group or individual in another class.

TOOLS FOR THE TEKS: INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM
Classroom Audio Podcasting
I chose this article about podcasting because I felt completely confused about the concept of podcasting. I was under the impression that you had to have an Ipod to do podcasting. This article showed me the truths and uses of podcasting.
What did you learn from the post on the home page? Is it something you are use in your classroom?
I learned that I can do podcasting in my classroom with minimal effort and that I have the tools I need to create some interesting and educational podcasts.
I plan to use Photo Story, which I feel is a form of podcasting in my business classroom next year. I teach business classes, so I would like to create a podcaste for resume writing, job interview, and dressing for success.
Describe a lesson that you will create or change to include skills learned from this site.
I have a digital camera in my classroom which I will have students take pictures of the vaious steps to tying a tie. They can then insert the picture and add audio as to how to tye the tie. I think we will aslo do one on interview dos and don'ts.
The article that interested me the most was Online Safety:What every educator should know. I feel it is a very important topic for parents, teachers and students. As it becomes more important to integrate internet and collaboration in the curriculum so does saftey. Although the younger students won't be in chat rooms or things of that nature, predators get information in many ways.
This article explained that sometimes parents treat the internet as the child's diary and won't ask questions, but it is critical to ask those questions. It is important that children are balanced even on the internet--not spending 50 hours on Britney Spears. It also pointed out that some sites ask students to register, even if they are free, if it is not a reputable site they may ask for personal information. Students, teachers and parents need to uderstand what is private informationa and when to avoid a site. Cyberbulling is also becoming a problem. Students need to be reminded that just because you are not facing the person doesn't means words don't hurt.
The lesson I would incorporate, at a second grade level, would be from CyberSmart. It explains fun in cyberspace, but teaches "What's Private?" It gives a list of questions and when to involve parents and teachers when exploring a web site. It allows the students to go onto sites and then answer questions about where they went, what they did there, and how they applied the rules from CyberSmart.
The article I chose under resources was "A New Adventure - Neat Things on the Web". I chose this because I didn't know what pageflakes were. I learned that there are educational pageflakes links to subjects such as a writing tutor, grammar, Do's and Don't for Young Writeres, and Test Taking Strategies. These links could be placed on my blog or wiki as a resource for students.
From the post of the home page I learned about a voice thread. The author described them as digital stories or Interactive Digital Scrapbooking. If they are set to public then you need comment moderation. I also found the Cyber Golden Rule: Don't do anything online you wouldn't do face to face. I think I will post that in my room the fall.
The lesson I can create from these sites would deal with student product presentations. My marketing students could use voice threads to make a presentation. They could also use animoto.com to make 30 second product promotional videos.
I read the article about Online Safety that said that wired kids make 110 decisions a minute...not all good. Then I went to the resources on professional development on internet safety. The internet is a powerful tool, and in learning to use any tool, safety should be a concern.
I would like to use these resources with both teachers and parents to give them some resources to use to help kids (and perhaps themselves) to be able to use the internet safely and ethically.
I am completely foreign to the world of wikis, podcasts, blogs, etc. The article I found most helpful was "Wikis in Plain English". It gave me an understanding of how wikis are used and how I could utilize them for my Health classes. We do a number of group research activities and this would allow the students to collaborate on their projects. Podcasting would enhance our Health lessons by allowing the students to create podcasts about drugs, alcohol, and a number of health topics. I'll be moving from the high school to the middle school this year and I hope to gain the knowledge to incorportate this technology into my classroom.
